How to Write a Cover Letter in the Philippines (Samples)
· 5 min read
A cover letter, often called an application letter in the Philippines, is a one-page letter that says which job you want, why you fit it, and how to reach you. Keep it to three or four short paragraphs, write a new one for each job, and do not repeat your resume line by line.
Cover letter or application letter?
In Philippine job posts the two terms mean the same thing: a short letter sent together with your resume. Some employers also call it a letter of intent.
Write one when the job post asks for it, when you email your resume directly to a company, or when you apply as a walk-in. If an online form has no place for a letter, you can skip it.
Your resume lists facts. The letter connects them to this one job. If you still need the resume, start with how to write a resume.
The structure of a cover letter
- Header: your name, mobile number, email address and city, then the date.
- Recipient: the name and title of the hiring manager, the company and its address.
- Greeting: Dear Ms. Reyes, or Dear Hiring Manager, if you cannot find a name.
- Opening paragraph: the position, where you saw it, and one line on why you fit.
- Middle paragraph or two: two or three pieces of proof that match the job post.
- Closing paragraph: your availability, a thank-you and how to contact you.
- Sign-off: Sincerely, or Respectfully yours, followed by your full name.
Length and format
- One page, about 250 to 350 words.
- The same font and header as your resume, so the two look like a set.
- Font size 10.5 to 12, with normal margins.
- Saved as a PDF unless the employer asks for another format.
- Named clearly, for example Mendoza-Carla-Cover-Letter.pdf.
If you are sending the application by email, the letter can go in the body of the email instead of a separate attachment. See how to email a resume for the short version.
How to write each part
The opening
Say what you are applying for and give the reader a reason to keep going. Skip the long introduction about yourself.
Weak
I am writing this letter to express my intention to apply for any vacant position in your prestigious company that suits my qualifications.
Better
I am applying for the Administrative Assistant position posted on your careers page. I have four years of office administration experience supporting teams of up to 30 people.
The middle
Pick the two or three requirements that matter most in the job post. For each one, give a short piece of proof: a number, a tool, a result. This is where most letters go wrong by listing duties or by copying the resume.
The closing
Say when you can be interviewed and when you can start, thank the reader, and stop. One or two sentences are enough.
Use the name of the company and the exact job title at least once. A letter that could be sent to any employer reads like one that was.

Ms. Angela Reyes
HR Manager, Northpoint Logistics Inc.
Ortigas Center, Pasig City
Dear Ms. Reyes,
I am applying for the Administrative Assistant position posted on your careers page. I have four years of office administration experience at a freight company, where I supported a team of 30.
In my current role at Bayside Freight Services, I manage the calendars of three managers, prepare purchase requests and keep the filing system for more than 2,000 shipment records. Last year I moved our supply requests from paper forms to a shared Google Sheet, which cut approval time from three days to one.
Your post mentions strong Excel skills and experience with vendors. I prepare our monthly expense report using pivot tables, and I coordinate with 15 suppliers on deliveries and billing.
I am available for an interview any weekday and can start within 30 days of an offer. Thank you for your time. You can reach me at 0917 555 0142.
Sincerely,
Carla Mendoza
Sample cover letter for a fresh graduate
With no work history, use your internship, thesis, school projects and organizations as proof. One specific project is worth more than a paragraph about being eager to learn.

Mr. Paolo Lim
IT Supervisor, Lumenta Business Solutions
Cebu IT Park, Cebu City
Dear Mr. Lim,
I am applying for the Junior IT Support position you posted on JobStreet. I graduated this year with a BS in Information Technology from Visayas State College.
During my 486-hour internship at a local cooperative, I set up 20 workstations, reset user accounts and answered about 10 support requests a day. For my capstone project, my group built an inventory system for a hardware store that the owner still uses.
I am comfortable with Windows, basic networking and MS Office, and I explain technical steps clearly to non-technical users. I would welcome the chance to do the same for your team.
I am available for an interview at any time and can start immediately. Thank you for considering my application.
Respectfully yours,
Miguel Ramos
Pair the letter with a resume built the same way. Our fresh graduate resume example shows how to lay out school projects and internships.
Before you send it
- Check the company name, the person's name and the job title. A wrong name is the fastest way to be set aside.
- Read the letter out loud once to catch missing words.
- Make sure the mobile number and email match the ones on your resume.
- Remove sentences that are only about what you want from the job.
- Confirm every number in the letter also appears, or could be explained, in your resume.
If you want a head start, the cover letter builder gives you a letter that matches your resume's design, and can draft one from the job post on a Pro pass. Edit it until it sounds like you.
Put it into practice
Start with a template that screening software can read, then fill in your own details. It is free to start.
Write your cover letterCommon questions
Is a cover letter the same as an application letter?+
Yes. In the Philippines both terms describe the short letter you send with your resume to say which job you want and why you fit.
How long should a cover letter be?+
One page at most, usually three or four short paragraphs or about 250 to 350 words.
Who do I address the letter to if there is no name?+
Check the job post and the company website first. If you cannot find a name, Dear Hiring Manager is fine.
Do I need a cover letter if the job post does not ask for one?+
It is optional, but a short, specific letter helps when you email a company directly or when your resume needs context, such as a career change or a gap.
